The Sella group announces the disappearance of Maurizio Sella

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – “The Sella group communicates with deep pain that in the late evening of yesterday was missed Maurizio Sella, because of a disease that has suddenly and quickly aggravated”. It’s what you read in a note.
Maurizio Sella, 83 years old, Cavaliere del Lavoro, has worked for almost sixty years in the family company leading it in a solid and lasting growth and has committed itself to the service of institutions and organizations representing the banking sector and the business world, in Italy and in Europe, explains the note.
“Until the last moment, even in these days of physical suffering, he dedicated every moment to working for the company and for the family. Today – said CEO Pietro Sella, also on behalf of the family members, the Boards of Directors and colleagues of all the companies of the group – leaves us the one to whom we owe the success of the Group in which we work and a great example of dedication, wisdom, vision and entrepreneurship. In practice he had long prepared every aspect of his succession. But what most of all leaves us is a great moral heritage, made of teachings and unwavering trust, determination and work for the future. His strength, his example, his integrity and his confidence in the future are and will always be our distinctive element.”
He graduated in Economics and Business at the University of Turin in 1966, joined the same year in Banca Sella, founded in 1886 by Gaudenzio Sella along with six other brothers and cousins, at the time led by his uncle Giorgio and his father Ernesto. As a family tradition begins with the “sportello” and takes the line, going through all stages of the career.
In this environment, as he wrote himself recounting his professional and entrepreneurial path, “I have breathed from birth values such as intractability, entrepreneurship, sense of duty, ethics of work, honesty, dedication to family business, the importance of the union of family shareholders and the love for the customer who gives us bread (which is one of our teachings always alive in our family and in our company).
He served as CEO and General Manager of the bank from 1974 to 2002, leading its growth across the national territory and its innovation in organization, technology infrastructure and customer services. From 2000 until May of this year he is president of Banca Sella Holding, the group leader Sella born from the important development of the family bank, within which he is also president of Banca Patrimoni Sella & C.
He also owes the birth of the family holding company “Maurizio Sella Saa”, strongly wanted to ensure optimal governance, and of which he was president from birth in 1989 until 2021.
Thanks to his entrepreneurial commitment in 1991, only 49 years old, he is appointed Knight of Labour and in 2018 Knight of the Grand Cross, the highest degree of the order to the merit of the Italian Republic conferred by the President of the Republic. Since 2019 he has presided over the National Federation of the Knights of Labour, after having led in the three years before the Piedmontese Group.
He was particularly involved in the banking and business sector representation organizations, in Italy and Europe. From 1990 to 2006 he was president of the Italian Banking Association, for the four consecutive mandates then provided by the statute, in a period of great transformations, privatizations and consolidation of the sector, also marked by the historical passage to the Euro. He was still in the Executive Committee and member of the Committee of the Presidency. From 1998 to 2004 he was also president of the European Banking Federation (FBE).
He was among the animators and president of the Italian Association of Family Companies (Aidaf) from 2007 to 2013, president of the Association between Italian Companies for Actions (Assonime) from 2013 to 2017 and in the same years member of the Corporate Governance Committee of Borsa Italiana.
In the European context, he was referent for Italy to the Payment System Steering Group and the Payment System Technical Development Group from 1992 to 1997. Afterwards, he held the role of “alternate president” in the Sepa Council at the ECB, from 2010 to 2014, and in the Euro Retail Payments Board (ERPB), starting in 2014. He also presided over the Groupement Europèen de Banques (GEB), which was born in 1978 to promote the comparison between small and medium-sized banks of different European countries. Since the 1990s, he has been part of the Council for relations between Italy and the United States and the Italian Group of the Trilateral Commission.
He was a founder member of the Cavour Foundation in Turin and President of the Luigi Einaudi Institute in Rome.
