Wednesday, September 16, on the 22nd floor of Piazza Italia, at 10 Times Square, New York presented its number 17, in an evening that mixed journalism, sports, cinema and a new generation of Italians in New York, with direct views of the signs of Times Square.
To open the evening was Marco Giovanelli, cofounder of Piazza Italia, who hosted the event: “Newyorkese is one of the companies within Piazza Italia, a space that wants to be a point of reference for Italian companies that develop in the United States,” he explained, recalling that Piazza Italia has been open for six years, but has moved to this building only since June 1 last. To bring institutional greetings was Alessandra Oliva, representing the Consulate, with congratulations on the film New York Story. Among the public also the Congressman Christian Di Sanzo.
To present the evening was Davide Ippolito, CEO of New York, who opened up telling the difference between his newspaper and the big city newspapers: “The New York Times gives millions of news. The New Yorker gives the push to love the city. It is the newspaper of all Italians living in New York.” He then filed number 17, bringing his lucky number: “I was born on the 17, so it’s a fundamental number for me.” On the stage he announced three of the four “super excellences” of the issue: actress Alice Lussiana Parente, face of cover and protagonist of the film New York – In New York Story, vice coach of the New York Knicks NBA champions Riccardo Fois, and the historical signatures of Italian journalism Maria Teresa Cometto and Glauco Maggi. Assente Angela Russo, Chief Creative Officer of AGBO and sister of the Russian Brothers, who still sent a greeting to the editorial staff. Among the special guests of the evening also Silvana Mangione and Matteo Zuretti, while Pasquale Riccio told the work behind Campus Salute.
Several told a teaching received by director Peter Greenaway, who brings with him as an actress: “You really have to believe it when you do a show. Every single thing must be taken with seriousness, one must live thoroughly every character”. And on stage instinct: “Sometimes you don’t have to do the same thing again. If the first time is right, you can trust that.” It defines them as “small pebbles” that takes after each time it goes on the set.
Fois, questioned about his next goal after the NBA title won last season, answered without hesitation: win again. He told that, after the first win, he learned to manage differently the summer and the preparation, an experience he has already shared with some players of the national team, explaining that he wants to continue to win to try again the same emotions.
Maria Teresa Cometto and Glauco Maggi told their book on September 11, of which were the only Italian journalists present under the Towers that day, by coincidence, because they lived nearby. “The book is divided into three parts,” Maggi explained. “The first is our direct testimony, with the songs of our articles released the next day in the Italian newspapers.” The second part retraces the five mayors since then, from Giuliani, “the man of Time”, who unleashed the city to reopen Broadway, Wall Street and museums, up to Bloomberg, who led New York through the financial crisis of 2008-2009.
The evening also had a moment dedicated to the Future Leaders Under 30, the initiative born in collaboration with United Italian Societies (UIS), the largest Italian student association in the world, no profit and guided by students for students, with the aim of building a community for Italians abroad, especially in the United States, among mentoring programs for those who want to move to America and for those who have already arrived. Fourteen young Italians and Italian-Americans, selected from over fifty applications, presented themselves to the public with a pitch of one minute each, in a mosaic of paths ranging from tech entrepreneurship to finance, from fashion to artificial intelligence. The profiles will be presented online for the vote, entrusted to a double jury, popular and quality, the latter composed of CEOs and top managers active in the United States. The winner will be awarded on October 10 at Carnegie Hall.
The presentation closed with a moment of networking and a DJ set, among the editorial staff, guests of the evening and representatives of the Italian and Italian-American community of New York.
