The integrated communications system in Italy is worth 20.4 billion and 0,95 of GDP

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Authority for Communications Guarantees has established the overall economic value of the Integrated Communications System (Sic) for the year 2023, as provided by the TUSMA (legislative Decree 8 November 2021, n. 208).

The Sic is estimated at EUR 20.4 billion, equal to 0.95% of GDP. It confirms the importance of online advertising that, with 7 billion euros (34.7% of the Sic) and a growth of 12.2%, further expands the gap regarding advertising on traditional media, stable at about 5 billion (24.6% of the Sic). As for the distribution of resources between the different operators, in the measure the Authority has evidenced of those who have obtained revenues at least 1% of the total.

It has emerged that none of the operators in 2023 realizes revenues above the threshold of 20%; the first two are higher than 10%; operators exceeding 8%, while remaining below 10%, are three, one more than the previous year. Persons with at least 1% share remain twelve, the same as 2022, although with some adjustments in positions, and are jointly 69.3% of total resources. Rai maintains the first position, with a share of 12.3% (-0.7 percentage points compared to 2022) and Alphabet/Google confirms the second place with 11.8% of total resources (+0.4 percentage points).

A reduction in the gap between the first and second operator is thus recorded. Following, the Fininvest and Comcast/Sky group, with quotas of 9.4% respectively (-0.4 percentage points) and 9.2% (-0.7 percentage points).

Among others, there is the relevance of online platforms that see their weight growing on the total resources, with Meta/Facebook occupying the fifth position and holds a share greater than 8%, Amazon, Netflix and DAZN that are located in the sixth, seventh and ninth place, with an incidence of their revenues respectively of 4.5%, 3.3% and 2.4%. In view of the composition of the Sic, considering the areas of economic activity, the prevailing role of the services of audiovisual and radio media is evident, which with almost €8.9 billion absorb 44% of the overall economic resources (-1.2 percentage points compared to 2022).

Within the area, clear services (4.8 billion), recorded a slight decline (-1.3%), for the contraction of resources from public funds, while paid services (3.5 billion), show a positive dynamic. The growth of the online component (+20.9%), largely offsets the decline of the traditional segment (-5%). The radio with 7% of revenues in the area grows by 4.5%. Electronic publishing and online advertising, whose incidence on the Sic is close to 36% (+2.2 percentage points) due in particular to online advertising, which represents 97% of the sector.

Traditional publishing (quotidians, periodicals and press agencies) falls to 14%: the 6.1% revenue contraction reflects the structural crisis of the sector, which affects both the sale of copies and advertising. The picture completes the external advertising (such as, for example, the poster) with 715 million euros (+8.8%) and an incidence of 4% on the Sic, and the cinema, which reaches 523 million euros (+37.3%), thanks above all to the increase of the box office.
