ROMA (ITALPRESS) – At the Auditorium Parco della Musica, in the presence of the president of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, ministers Andrea Abodi, Matteo Piantedosi, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and Antonio Tajani and numerous representatives of institutions and companies, Snam celebrated its 85 years. The anniversary was the occasion to retrace a story that is closely interwoven with the economic and industrial one of Italy, made of infrastructure, skills and great projects at the service of the country. The celebrations, which hosted, among other things, the concert of the State Police Band, will continue on November 9 at the headquarters of Milan, Snam Energy House, with the inauguration of the interactive exhibition dedicated. Founded on 30 October 1941 as a Metanodotti National Company, Snam has designed, designed and implemented the progressive metanization of Italy, in the wake of Enrico Mattei’s guide and insights, which has been president since 1949 until his death in 1962. It is a link between the availability of energy, infrastructure and growth, which crosses the history of the Group and that of the Republic, revealing how the choices made over the decades have allowed to realize an increasingly diversified and interconnected system.
“Celebrating Snam’s 85th anniversary means retracing the history of large projects, without which the country’s energy security would not be possible today, but also the history of so many people who devote themselves daily,” said Alessandro Zehenter, Snam’s president, who also recalled the role of the Snam Foundation and the value of corporate volunteering initiatives, highlighting the importance of the relationship with communities and the participation of people in social growth. “The human capital has always been a decisive component in Snam’s growth. We have the responsibility to preserve the heritage of knowledge built in these 85 years and, at the same time, to continue to renew it, bringing together different generations, transferring experiences and welcoming new ideas.”.
Agostino Scornajenchi, managing director of Snam, traced the origins of the company and the link with Italian industrial history, recalling the figure of Enrico Mattei and the role of methane in the reconstruction and development of the country. “When our country had a dramatic need to rebuild and grow, the gas that Mattei sought and found in the Po Valley became the instrument of its industrial rebirth. But energy, in order to produce development, had to be able to arrive where it serves, and therefore needed infrastructure. They needed methanol. It needed a network.” He stressed that “energy is much more than a leverage of economic competitiveness. It is a precondition for national security, resilience of productive systems and the capacity of a country to exercise its sovereignty. Energy security is not born when the emergency arrives: the emergency, if anything, wise the level. It builds many years before. We must have the courage to talk about energy integration, building a system in which different sources, infrastructure and technologies can integrate, guaranteeing security, sustainability and competitiveness.” Scornajenchi finally failed that, after 85 years, Snam continues to work so that “energy is never a limit to Italy’s freedom, but one of the preconditions of its strength”.
Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, speaking at the Rome Auditorium on the occasion of the celebrations for the 85th anniversary of Snam. “Celebrating Snam’s 85th anniversary means retracing an important part of Italy’s industrial history. Snam played a key role. Energy networks are in fact a strategic asset of the country, essential for the continuity of productive activities, territorial cohesion and national security”.
Today Snam operates along the different components of the gas system, from transport to storage to regasification. The network exceeds 38 thousand kilometers in Italy and abroad and the most recent investments, from the new regasifiers to the Adriatic Line, from the project of capture and storage of the CO2 of Ravenna to the constant consolidation of the storage, today filled for more than 90% in view of the winter season, continue in the direction of greater security and flexibility of the system. An infrastructure and competences handed down from generation to generation that, even with the help of new technologies linked to artificial intelligence, will be called to play an increasingly central role for the balance of the Italian and European energy system. Snam will continue to operate in this direction, in the wake of a pragmatic path of energy integration among the different sources available today, in which security of supply, protection of industrial fabric and environmental sustainability can proceed together in the decades to come.
