ROMA (ITALPRESS) – On the occasion of the World Day for the Prevention of Suicide, the Ministry of Health informs that, within the framework of the Technical Table on Mental Health coordinated by Professor Alberto Siracusano, an address document is being prepared that will be the basis for the elaboration of a National Plan for the prevention of suicide in Italy. The document will identify strategies and interventions to strengthen prevention, early identification of risk situations and taking into account, with particular attention to women, adolescents and particularly fragile situations such as prisons. “We must intervene first, especially among young people and in situations of greater vulnerability, and ensure adequate and timely assistance,” says the Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci.
The document will also address the theme of support and taking charge of the so-called survivors, people who have lost a family member or a loved one for suicide and need specific interventions and paths of support.
“Behind all suffering there are people, families and communities. Strengthening prevention also means contrasting the stigma that still too often surrounds mental discomfort and fostering a culture of listening and the request for help,” adds Schillaci.
The work started is part of the widest path activated by the Ministry to strengthen mental health policies. Last December, the National Plan for Mental Health Actions was approved, which had been missing in Italy for 13 years. In this context, guidelines dedicated to depression are also being developed.
