Recovering the view after a stroke, in Genoa a winning model of digital health

GENOVA (ITALPRESS) – Start a rehabilitation path to fully recover the view after a stroke, thanks to a state-of-the-art medical device and a stable and fast internet connection. An example of winning synergy between medicine and technology coming from Genoa, where the collaboration between Fondazione Chiossone, Open Fiber and Linari Medical draws a model of digital health that could improve life to thousands of patients in the future. “Two years ago I had a stroke that caused me an amyanopsia on the left side – says Bruno Sarti, retired radiologist, resident in the Pegli district. This has caused great problems for my activities, including my main one, who was going on a motorbike, because of course it is a risk”. The David Chiossone Foundation, one of the leading Italian organizations dedicated to the rehabilitation of cynical and hypovedent people and to the management of complex disability, has proposed to Bruno Sarti a domiciliary therapy based on AVDesk, a medical device developed by Linari Medical, certified for neurovisive telerability and usable in specialized structures or directly at home. The system combines multisensory audiovisual stimuli, cloud data analysis and artificial intelligence algorithms that allow doctors to monitor and oversee the therapeutic path even remotely. Over a thousand patients, among adults and children, have already used this technology, which allows to realize intensive and personalized programs with the aim of improving visual and cognitive skills without resorting to invasive interventions or pharmacological treatments. “I can handle it independently, just a desk and a fast fiber – says Sarti –. The operation is simple: when you turn on the red lights, which can appear right or left, I have to crush the button. One room checks that I don’t turn my head, not to cheat. Another type of exercise includes an acoustic signal. I have to say the results are coming. My hope is to return to life before, being able to go back on the bike would be a big advantage”. “This is a curved screen that emits visual and sound stimuli according to certain frequencies – explains Caterina Stimola, CEO of Linari Medical -. The result is that, after about 20 hours of treatment, patients recover their autonomy, some even return to drive. It is a medical device that addresses millions of children and adults who have a neurological visual deficit, such as maculopathy or post-ictus deficiency. A fundamental requirement is the presence of an optical fiber that is reliable and fast.” Cloud-based applications and artificial intelligence require a continuous exchange of data between patients and specialists. Interruptions of connection, high latency or network instability may impair continuity of treatment and therapeutic adherence. This is why fiber optics are an enabling infrastructure for telemedicine and digital rehabilitation. The home of Bruno Sarti is reached by the connection of Open Fiber with FTTH technology (Fiber To The Home) which guarantees a maximum speed of 10 gigabits per second. Unlike the ADSL, the connection to a fixed network takes place through the drafting of a basement cable that connects the user’s home or company to the so-called store, which in turn is connected to the central. In Genoa city, the company has sold over 234,000 real estate units, for a total of about 30 thousand buildings reached, with an infrastructure that develops for about 500 km and an investment cost of over 68 million euros.“Open Fiber has now completed on most of the national territory the realization of a fiber optic network of last generation – explains Luca Nanna, area manager North Westby Open Fiber -. This infrastructure is often associated with innovative services, such as high definition streaming and smart working, but the true value of fiber is not only connectivity. Thanks to our network and its performance, telemedicine plays a social and strategic role for our country. Therapies can achieve the desired effects both in hospital and at home, where the patient can, independently, continue rehabilitation. In this sense fiber is not only a technology, but it becomes a tool that enables inclusion, health and well-being for people and communities.” In June 2026, Open Fiber sold over 16,5 million FTTH fiber optic real estate units, confirming by far the main operator of this technology in Italy, among the leaders in Europe, and the first of the wholesale only operators in the continent. Over 300 national and international operators have already signed trade agreements for the use of its ultra-broadband network. Every day Open Fiber employs about 13 thousand units between staff and induced. The company is now controlled by Open Fiber Holdings, a 60% stake by Cdp Equity and 40% by Macquarie Asset Management.
