GENOVA (ITALPRESS) – From 2026 in the hospitals of the metropolitan hospital of Genoa will be active the model of orthopaedic surgery SSD (Same Day Discharge) for the interventions of anca and knee prostheses, which allows the resignation of the patient within 24 hours from the operation in conditions of full clinical safety. The project, announced today in a press conference by the Liguria Region, will be active by the end of the year to the San Martino Polyclinic, once the training of specialists is completed, then will be progressively extended to the other citizens poles: Villa Scassi, Galliera and San Carlo di Voltri. “The introduction of the SSD path – explains Massimo Nicolò, Councillor for Health Liguria Region – is an organizational innovation that combines quality of care, clinical safety and improved patient experience. To issue within 24 hours, in carefully selected cases and in full safety, means to promote faster recovery, reduce the risks associated with prolonged decency and enhance a welfare model based on the integration between different professionalism and the best scientific evidence. The objective is to bring this model, after the start phase to San Martino, to all hospitals of the Metropolitan Hospital Company, so that an increasing number of citizens can benefit from innovative, appropriate and high quality care paths. The dismissal within 24 hours does not mean reducing assistance, but offering a more modern, personalized and safe path, made possible by the integration of surgical, anesthetic, nursing and rehabilitation skills. This results for patients in a faster recovery of autonomy and quick return to their home, while for the healthcare system in an even more appropriate use of available resources, maintaining high quality standards of care. There are several world centres in the United States and Ireland, which have long been applying this protocol and which demonstrate the excellence of the path through safety indicators, clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction and organizational efficiency, cost control.” Every year in the province of Genoa, 3.549 arthroprothesis interventions are performed, of which 1,913 hip prostheses and 1,1636 knee prostheses, numbers that testify how this surgery represents a strategic activity for the health system and how much it is necessary to adopt increasingly innovative and efficient organizational models.
The SSD model was born in the United States and will be the Orthopedic Associates Surgical Center (OASC) of the Orthopedic Associates of Hartford (OAH) group based in the state of Connecticut to take care of the specialized training path. “We do not think of bringing in Italy a new surgical technique – says Pietro Memmo, president of the Orthopedic Associates of Hartford –. Aom professionals already have clinical skills of excellence. We can provide a well-established organizational model in the United States, the 15-year case of activity to activate an outpatient orthopaedic surgery of hip prostheses and knees during a day of decency. It is a question of rethinking, for a defined target of patients, the entire path of taking into account: before, during and after the intervention. For us the safety and quality of intervention and assistance, the reduction of complications and hospital infections are the absolute priority”. The new path stems from the evolution of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs and integrates the most advanced surgical, anesthetic and rehabilitation techniques. The goal is not simply to reduce the stay in the hospital, but to rethink the entire treatment path, from patient selection to preoperative preparation, from optimal control of pain to early mobilization, to monitoring after discharge.
The patient is thus accompanied along a custom-built multidisciplinary path, which allows for faster functional recovery, a reduction of the risks associated with prolonged obsessiveness and an early return in their living environment, maintaining high standards of quality and safety. “To ensure the success of the project – concludes Calamai – there is a specific training course for professionals involved, with the creation of a dedicated multidisciplinary team that will accompany all the stages of the new organizational model”.
