LAMPEDUSA (AGRIGENTO) (ITALPRESS) – Pope Leo XIV arrived in Lampedusa for his pastoral visit. The Holy Father was welcomed by the metropolitan archbishop of Agrigento, Monsignor Alessandro Damiano; from the undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council, Alfredo Mantovano; from the president of the Region Sicily Renato Schifani; from the prefect of Agrigento Salvatore Caccamo; from the mayor of Lampedusa Filippo Mannino; from the president of the Free Municipal Consortium of Agrigento Giuseppe Pendolino.
The first act of the pastoral visit was the stop at the cemetery where migrants died at sea on the journeys of hope, with a floral homage on the tombs. The Holy Father has laid a crown of flowers and held a few minutes in prayer recollection. In the cemetery there is the tomb of the little Youssef Ali Kanneh, the only tomb with a photograph. Pope Leo XIV then left the cemetery to stop at the “Porta d’Europa” and then stop at the Molo Favaloro.
Here he will bless the plate that titles the Pier to Pope Francis and will health some migrants. At 10 am the celebration of Mass and at the end I greet the authorities, the sick children, the volunteers, before returning to the Vatican around 12:30.
