Nordio meets Commissioner Ue for Justice McGrath, “constructive comparison” on the rule of law

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Minister of the North met today, at his invitation, Michael McGrath, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the rule of law and consumer protection. In continuity with a consolidated collaboration relationship, the Minister Nordio had a constructive comparison with McGrath on the themes that will occupy the next report on the State of Law, edition 2026, of imminent publication in July. On the occasion of the meeting, the Minister recalled how the fight against corruption is a political priority of the action of government, confirmed by interventions already adopted in recent years and by further initiatives in the yard, also to further strengthen the investigations of the judiciary. Corruption cases are complex and require the management of large volumes of probatory material, including digital data obtained through authorization orders from Internet service providers and telecommunications: this is why you are investing in projects that will allow an integrated analysis between registers and digital files, offering prosecutors a significantly stronger set of investigative tools. In this background, Nordio updated Commissioner McGrath on further progress in the field of digitalisation of Justice, in particular the state (and quality) of interoperability between judicial registers and investigative databases, also central to the Italian anti-corruption strategy. He also noted the progress made in the digital transformation of criminal justice where, thanks to the computer instrument adopted – the “PP” criminal – it is becoming a complete digital integration of second-degree proceedings and a complete interoperability with the Court of Cassation.

With reference to the issue of freedom of press, as well as central to the Report on the State of Law, Minister Nordio has informed McGrath about the progress of ongoing parliamentary work that is focusing on a reform of the existing legal framework to address both the extension of the rules in force to online publications and the abolition of detention penalties for the crime of defamation of the press. At the end of the meeting, McGrath and Nordio recalled the next appointment in the European agenda, an opportunity to exploit in order to continue the constructive confrontation: the EU Justice Council in Dublin, next July.
