In recent months, in New York, the moment of spending has passed from being a routine to a small proof of economic resistance. The rise in food has made evident a tension that crosses different neighborhoods and social bands, well beyond the historically fragile areas. In short, in a city where to put a dish at the table seems to have become a challenge, so that the new mayor has already proposed in the election campaign to open municipal supermarkets, the idea of having a completely free supermarket would go so far. And that’s what’s about to happen.
Polymarket, a company founded in New York and active in the betting industry, has announced a totally free supermarket that will remain operational for five days, from 12 to 16 February. A sort of temporary pop-up like so many open it in the Big Apple. Polymarket called it the first free grocery store in New York, but for now the precise address has not yet been revealed; what is known is that the work began in January and that the opening is scheduled for 12 February.
According to Polymarket, the store will be accessible to all residents of the city, without registration or, in fact, shopping. Customers will be able to enter and take food for free, seemingly without spending limits. The pop-up was presented as an operation designed for “people who move forward to New York”, at a time when the cost of spending became one of the most sensitive issues for those living in the city, especially in middle and low income neighborhoods.
The opening of the supermarket is accompanied by a $1 million donation to Food Bank For NYC, one of the main organizations involved in the distribution of food aid in the five districts. According to the most recent data of the city administration, more than a million New Yorkers live in conditions of food insecurity, with regular difficulties in accessing enough or quality food. Food Bank For NYC coordinates a network of canteens, dispenses and assistance programs that each year reach hundreds of thousands of families.
