ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In May 2026 the climate of consumer confidence improves, from 90,8 to 93,4; the composite indicator of the climate of trust of enterprises, instead, is estimated to be decreasing (from 95,1 to 94,1). It makes Istat known. Among consumers, there is an improvement in opinions on the personal economic situation and expectations on the general economic situation: both the economic and the future climate increase (from 82.7 to 86.2 and from 82.5 to 87.2, respectively), the personal climate rises from 93.8 to 96.0 and the current climate passes from 96.9 to 98.0.
With reference to enterprises, contrasting signals come from the inquired sectors: the climate of trust falls both in the market services and in the buildings (from 98,9 to 96,8 and from 100,8 to 99,4, respectively) and remains stable in the manufacture (to 87,9); instead, trust improves in retail trade (the index rises from 100,8 to 101,0). As for the components of the indexes of trust, in the manufacture they improve the judgments on orders while the expectations on production remain substantially unchanged in the presence of an accumulation of stocks. In buildings both variables suffer a decline. By switching to market services, Istat shows a widespread deterioration of all components.
In retail trade, the increase in trust is mainly due to improved sales judgments and a decrease in stock stocks; sales expectations, however, worsen.
“In May 2026 the sentiment of economic operators shows a divergent trend, characterized by the improvement of consumer confidence (which remains below the levels recorded in the first two months of the year), in the face of a decline in that of the enterprises – comments the Institute of Statistics -. All the variables entering the calculation of consumer confidence have positive developments, except for the general economic situation and opinions on the opportunity to save in the current phase. The slowdown in business confidence is driven by the falls recorded in market services and constructions, while manufacturing remains stable. The only counter-tendence sector is retail trade, which shows a slight increase in trust.”.
