Inflation rises to 1.2% annually in December, growth of 1.5% on average in 2025: Istat data

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In December, according to Istat data, the national consumer price index for the entire community (NIC), to the gross of tobacco, shows an increase of 0.2% on November 2025 and 1.2% on December 2024 (from +1.1% of the previous month), confirming the preliminary estimate. On average, in 2025, consumer prices recorded an increase of 1.5% (+1.0% in 2024). Inflation net of fresh energy and food (bottom inflation) and net energy alone shows an average annual increase of 1.9% (+2.0% in the previous year) and 2.0% (+2.1% in 2024). The slight acceleration of inflation observed in December is mainly due to the growth of the prices of services relative to the transports (from +0.9% to +2.6%), the unworked food (from +1.1% to +2.3%) and the various services (from +2.0% to +2.2%).

They slow down the prices of non-durable goods (from +1.0% to +0.6%) and recreational, cultural services and for the care of the person (from +3.0% to +2.7%), while the decline of those of regulated energy (from -3,2% to -5.2%). In December, the underlying inflation, net of fresh energy and food, remains stable at +1.7%; that net of only energy goods accelerates little (from +1.7% to +1.8%). The prices of food, for the care of the house and the person highlight in December an acceleration of their growth rate (from +1.5% to +1.9%), as well as those of high-frequency products of purchase (from +2.0% to +2.2%). The general index’s conjunctural increase reflects, for the most part, the growth in transport services prices (+3.1% also for seasonal factors) and unworked food (+0.4%).

The effects of these increases were only partly offset by the decrease in the prices of regulated energy (-0.6%) and recreational, cultural services and for the care of the person (-0.4%). The harmonised consumer price index (IPCA) increased by 0.2% on November 2025 and 1.2% compared to December 2024 (from +1.1% of the previous month), confirming the preliminary estimate. The average annual change in 2025 is +1.7% (+1.1% in 2024). The national consumer price index for households of workers and employees (FOI), net of tobacco, increases by 0.2% on November 2025 and 1.1% on December 2024. On average of the year, the growth of the FOI index, net of tobacco, is equal to +1.4% (was +0.8% in 2024). In 2025, inflation, measured by the ICA, is equal to +1.7%, both for families with lower spending levels and for those with higher spending.
