Inflation in December accelerates 1.2% annually

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – According to the preliminary estimates of Istat, in December 2025 the national index of consumer prices for the whole community (NIC), to the gross of tobacco, recorded an increase of 0.2% on a monthly basis and 1.2% on an annual basis (from +1.1% of the previous month). On average, in 2025, consumer prices recorded an increase of 1.5% (+1.0% in 2024).

Inflation net of fresh energy and food (the “bottom inflation”) and net energy alone show an average annual increase of 1.9% (+2.0% in the previous year) and 2% (+2.1% in 2024). The slight acceleration of inflation observed in December is mainly due to the growth of the prices of the Services relative to the transports (from +0.9% to +2.6%), of the non-worked food (from +1.1% to +2.3%) and processed (from +2.1% to +2.6%), partly attenuated by the decrease of those of the regulated Energy (from -3.2% to -5.3%) and by the slowing of the prices of the recreational services.

In December, “bottom inflation”, net of fresh energy and food, accelerates (from +1.7% to +1.8%), such as that net of only energy goods (from +1.7% to +1.9%). The rate of growth on an annual basis of the prices of food goods, for the care of the house and the person (from +1.5% to +2.2%) and of the high frequency products of purchase (from +2% to +2.2%) is accentuated.

The general index’s conjunctural increase reflects, for the most part, the growth of transport services prices (+3.1% also for seasonal factors) and unworked food (+0.4%). The effects of these increases were only partly offset by the decrease in prices of other aggregates, including that of regulated energy (-0.6%) and recreational, cultural and personal care services (-0.4%). According to preliminary estimates, the harmonised consumer price index (IPCA) recorded a monthly change of +0.2% and +1.2% annually (an acceleration of +1.1% of November).

In the average of 2025, the tendency of the harmonised index is +1.7% (+1.1% in 2024). “In December, according to the preliminary estimates, inflation rose to +1.2%, returning to the October level. On average 2025, consumer prices grew by 1.5% compared to the previous year, acceleration in comparison to the data recorded in 2024 (+1.0%) – Istat comments. On average annual inflation, the price dynamics of regulated energy assets weighed (+16.2% from -0.2% of 2024) and that of unworked food goods (+3.4% from +2.3%). In 2025 the underlying inflation stops at +1.9% (from +2.0% of 2024)”.
