ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In January 2026, on a monthly basis, the growth of employees and inactive persons is associated with the fall of the unemployed. The increase in employment (+0.3%, equal to +80 thousand units) involves men, employees, self-employed persons and all age groups, with the exception of 15-24 years which are decreasing; substantially stable employment for women. The employment rate rises to 62.6% (+0.2 points). Istat makes it known, pointing out that the decrease of people seeking work (- 7.1%, equal to -99 thousand units) concerns men, women and all age groups. The unemployment rate falls to 5.1% (-0.4 points) and youth unemployment to 18.9% (-1.9 points). The growth of inactives between 15 and 64 years (+0.3%, equal to +35 thousand units) is a synthesis of the increase between women and the decrease between men. The number of inactive climbs between 15-24 years, falls between 25-49 years and remains substantially stable among those who are at least 50 years old. The inactivity rate rises to 33.9% (+0.1 points).
Compared to the quarter of November 2025-January 2026 with the previous one (August-October 2025), growth in the number of employed (+0.1%, equal to +23 thousand units). Compared to the previous quarter, people in search of work decrease (-8.4%, equal to -125 thousand units) and increase the inactives of 15-64 years (+0.9%, equal to +116 thousand units). In January 2026, the number of employees exceeds that of January 2025 of 0.3% (+70 thousand units); the increase concerns women and those who are at least 50 years old, in the face of the decrease in other age classes and a substantial stability among men. The employment rate is unchanged compared to one year earlier. Compared to January 2025, the number of people seeking work decreases (-22.7%, equal to -384 thousand units) and that of the inactive between 15 and 64 years (+2.6%, equal to +322 thousand units).
“In January 2026 the number of employees, equal to 24 million 181 thousand, is growing compared to the previous month. The increase involves both employees – permanent (16 million 455 thousand) and at term (2 million 449 thousand) – and the autonomous (5 million 277 thousand) – is the commentary of the Institute of Statistics -. Employment also increased compared to January 2025 (+70 thousand employed in one year), due to the growth of permanent employees (+71 thousand) and the self-employed (+195 thousand) in the face of the decline of term employees (-196 thousand). On a monthly basis the employment rate rises to 62.6% and that of inactivity to 33.9%, the unemployment rate falls to 5.1%”.
