GDP and employment of the South grow more than the Central-North, Istat data

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In 2025 the Gross Domestic Product showed a moderately positive and substantially homogeneous dynamic in the different territorial divisions of the Country. GDP growth in volume was 0.5% in the North-West, North-East and Central, while the Mezzogiorno increased slightly (+0.6%).

From the sectoral point of view, the most significant increases in value added were observed in the Constructions in the Northwest (+4.1%) and in the Centre (+4.0%) and in the Northeast Trade (+2.7). The Mezzogiorno is the area that has more supported the growth of employment at national level, with an increase of 1.5% employment, followed by the Centre (+1.1%). More content was the increase in employment in the northern regions (Northwest +0.9% and Northeast +0.8%). It makes Istat known by providing the preliminary estimate of GDP and territorial employment.

In 2025, the gross domestic product, measured in volume, increased by 0.5% at national level. Preliminary estimates show a substantially homogeneous growth among the different territorial divisions of the country. Overall, in the regions of the Mezzogiorno there was a slightly higher growth than those of the Centre-North, with an increase of GDP of 0.6%, compared to an increase of 0.5% found in the remaining areas of the country, in line with the national average.

Employment, measured in terms of employment, increased by 1.1% at national level. The employment dynamics were more intense in the Mezzogiorno, where the highest increase was recorded (+1.5%). The Centre was attested to values in line with the national average (+1.1%), while in the remaining areas the growth was more contained (+0.9% in the Northwest and +0.8% in the Northeast).

In the regions of the North-West, the increase in value added was mainly supported by the construction sector (+4.1%), which in this territorial distribution recorded the highest increase compared to other areas of the country. More content but still positive trends are also observed in the business, public exercises, transport and telecommunications (+0.9%) and in the financial, real estate and professional services (+0.4%). The weaker the growth of Industry (+0.1%), while the decline in agriculture (-0.8%) and, more markedly, in the Other Services (-1.4%).

In the North-East the growth of added value was mainly driven by the trade sector, public exercises, transport and telecommunications (+2.7%), which in this distribution showed more dynamic between all areas of the country. Positive results were also observed in Constructions (+1.6%) and Other Services (+0.2%). Negative, on the other hand, the agricultural trends (- 1.6%), which recorded the most marked decline between the different territorial areas, the Industry (-0.4%) and the financial, real estate and professional services (-0.6%).

In the Centre the growth of added value was relatively widespread among the main productive sectors. The most sustained increase affected the constructions (+4.0%), followed by that from industry (+1.6%), while agriculture (+0.2%) and financial, real estate and professional services (+0.1%) showed a more moderate dynamic. In decline, however, the added value in the trade and transport sector (-0.2%) and in the Other Services (-0.4%).

In the Mezzogiorno, economic growth mainly affected the trade sector, public exercises, transport and telecommunications, with an increase in value added by 0.9%. Particularly positive developments have also been observed in the field of financial, real estate and professional services (+0.7%) and in agriculture (+1.0%), given the latter in dispute over the regions of the Centre-North. The dynamics of value added in Industry (+0.4%) and Construction (+0.1%), while the Other Services showed a slight decline (-0.2%).

Employment has increased in all macro areas of the country. In the Northwest and in the Center the highest increments have been recorded in the Constructions (with increases, respectively, 5.3% and 5.8%); while in the North-East the increase has affected mainly the trade sector (+2.3%) and the Other services (+2.1%). In the Mezzogiorno, however, the most substantial increases were recorded in the Financial, Real Estate and Professional Services (+2.8%) and in the Other Services (+2.4%).
