ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “In the past few hours the prosecutor of Palermo Maurizio De Lucia has launched an alarm on the state of prisons and on the role of the mafia within penitentiary institutions. An important alarm that deserves listening. Yet on the drama of prisons, both with regard to the unbearable overcrowding that removes dignity to prisoners and forces the prison police to work under unsustainable conditions, and with regard to security issues in recent years by the government there were no adequate answers. Nor are concrete interventions to solve this dramatic crisis.” Thus in a note the Central Executive Board of the National Association of Magistrates.
“In front of the alarm of a prosecutor in the front row in the fight against the Mafia, the reaction of the Minister of Justice leaves no question: no response in the merits, but only an uncomposed and unacceptable attack. The ministry has the task of solving the problems of the penitentiary system, not to attack with caution those who fight crime. We are at the side of the prosecutor De Lucia, the staff of the Police Department who plays a very delicate role with great professionalism and the supervisory magistrates who must manage situations of enormous complexity with systematically inadequate resources. Responses and immediate actions are needed on prisons,” the note concludes.
