ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “It has been 102 years since the murder of Mr. Giacomo Matteotti. It seems a long time away, but his memory remains alive. The Chamber of Deputies pays tribute to his memory, in memory of his famous speech delivered in this House on 30 May 1924, which cost him his life”. Thus the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana, on the occasion of the commemoration of Giacomo Matteotti, with the unveiling of a plate on his scranno.
“It does so with a plate now affixed to its outbreak, in implementation of the agenda presented by Mr Dori on the occasion of the approval of the House’s internal budget and unanimously accepted by the Bureau. Those words still resonate today as a short call in defense of freedom against any authoritarian drift – he continued –. But Matteotti that day did not denounce only the brows and abuses of the April 1924 elections. He did a lot more. He exposed the climate of intimidation, aggression and prevarication led by fascism to suffocate every dissenting voice. Matteotti was among the first to understand with clarity the serious threat that loomed on democratic institutions and civil and political freedoms. He identified in squadronism the armed arm of a regime that prevented the free expression of popular sovereignty. And he openly accused the Mussolinian government of founding its consent on the systematic use of violence. The tragic epilogue of that story is carved in clear letters in the collective memory of our country. And it reminds us that the sacrifice of brave men like Giacomo Matteotti was not vain.”.
“To their tenacity and their moral intransigence we owe the rebirth of Italy after the long twenty years of dictatorship. The democratic society of our days is the daughter of the courageous choices of those who preceded us. Reflecting on such dark pages of our history, a century away, is not a simple commemorative exercise. It is a call to safeguard those inviolable values of justice, freedom and human dignity that nourish the roots of our civil coexistence,” Fontana concluded.
