ROMA (ITALPRESS) – According to the data of the Bank of Italy’s report on fraudulent payment operations in Italy, in the second half of 2025 the rate of fraud, calculated as a ratio between fraudulent transactions and total payments, remains in the overall very content: 10 fraudulent cases every hundred thousand operations (0.010% in number) and 3 euro each one hundred thousand transated (0,003% in value).
Significant differences remain between the different payment tools. The rate of fraud is: or remained stable and extremely low in the case of transfers (2 euros each 100,000 euros transated, 0,002% in value; 4 fraudulent cases every 100,000 operations, 0,004% in number) and withdrawals from ATM (10 euros each 100,000 euros transated, 0.010% in value; 5 cases every 100,000 transactions, 0,005% in number); or higher but in appreciable reduction compared to the previous half for electronic instruments.
The rate of fraud related to instant SEPA transfers has remained significantly higher than that of ordinary transfers (0.028% in value and 0.012% in number against 0.002% in value and number) but in significant reduction compared to the previous semester (-38%) and the same period of 2024 (-53%). The average amount of fraud remains higher for ordinary SEPA transfers (€5.509) and snapshots (€1.850), compared to ATM withdrawals (505 euro), card payments (€80) and electronic currency (€41).
“distance” (e-commerce) operations remain more exposed to fraud than “non-distance” (physical OPs), but the gap has decreased compared to the previous semester. Cross-border operations continue to have a higher incidence of fraud than domestic ones, while fraud from manipulation is increasing and the prevailing type of bank transfer operations are confirmed.
The value of the losses incurred by the customer is higher for transfers (92%) and for withdrawals from ATM (68%), compared to card payments (40%) and electronic currency (40%).
