A woman attacked and raped in Central Park, the police are looking for the manager

A 39-year-old woman was attacked and raped on Saturday night, October 24, in Central Park, by a knife-armed man who then managed to escape. The attack took place around 20:30 in the eastern part of the park, near the intersection of East 66th Street and Fifth Avenue, a few blocks from the zoo and the main streets of the Upper East Side. NYPD is looking for the manager.

According to the investigators’ reconstruction, the woman was walking near the park when she was approached by a stranger. The man would show her a knife, forcing her to follow him inside Central Park, where she would rape her in a tree-lined area. A passerman would have witnessed at least one part of the attack and called the 911 emergency number, causing the escape of man. The reconstruction was reported by amNewYork, based on information collected from police sources.

Central Park district agents and rescuers arrived shortly after. The woman was transported to the hospital, where her conditions were judged stable. A witness, Andrew Trahair, told ABC7 New York that he was cycling in the area around 20:45 and seeing about eight agents talking to a visibly shocked woman.

The information on the attacker has so far been limited. Investigators believe it may be about thirty years old. According to ABC7, he was wearing a black sweatshirt with black hood and trousers and carrying a backpack of the same color. The police didn’t tell us if any surveillance cameras were available to identify it. The investigations continue and, at the moment, no official identification of the suspect has been made known.

The attack occurred in one of the most frequented areas of Manhattan. Central Park is crossed daily by residents, workers and tourists, but some of its areas become much less frequented after sunset. The news has aroused concern especially among the people who usually use the park to run, walk or return home. On Sunday morning, some of the people interviewed by local televisions told that they changed their programmes, preferring to wait for the full light of the day before entering the park.

The episode also arrives a few days from another assault reported in Central Park. On October 18, a 32-year-old woman told her she was beaten and robbed by three men while crossing the bike park, near West 93rd Street and West Drive. According to the testimony collected by CBS News New York, the woman had stopped to recover the fallen earphones on the ground when she was attacked. The three men would have stolen her backpack before she fled. Also in that case, according to the available updates, no arrests were made. There are no elements that connect the two episodes.

Police figures show that the rapes reported in the Central Park district jurisdiction area were four from the beginning of the year until 18 October, against three in the same period of 2025. Saturday’s aggression would bring the total to five. These are numbers in absolute terms, on which even a single complaint produces important percentage variations. The data also relates to episodes reported to the police, not necessarily all those that have occurred

The increase in rape complaints is, however, a topic which concerns more generally New York. According to the data of the NYPD reported from the New York Post, at 18 October, 1.693 rapes were reported in the city, compared to 1.650 in the same period of the previous year, with an increase of approximately 2.6 percent. The comparison should also be read taking into account changes to the legislation of the State of New York, which have expanded the legal definition of rape and can affect statistics. In the meantime, several other categories of serious offences have decreased.

Julie Menin, president of the New York City Council, also intervened on the attack, who expressed solidarity with the victim and asked for a rapid identification of the person responsible. Menin wrote that every New Yorker must be able to feel safe in the city, showing confidence in the work of investigators. Virginia Maloney, the City Council of the Upper East Side, also drew attention to the safety of women in public spaces. Maloney, who attends Central Park to run, noted that women must be able to do this without fearing aggression, regardless of time.

NYPD invited anyone in the East 66th Street and Fifth Avenue area around 20:30 on Saturday, or have useful information, to contact investigators. The reports, which can be provided in a confidential form, must be made through the Crime Stoppers service, at number 1-800-577-8477, or through the official police portal.
