A 14-year-old boy died yesterday afternoon after being hit by a bullet in his back in Edgemere, Queens. The shooting took place shortly after 15:30 near 51-24 Beach Channel Drive, within the Ocean Bay Apartments residential complex.
NYPD agents intervened after a 911 call and found the injured guy. The rescuers transported him under critical conditions to the Cohen Children’s Medical Center in Long Island, where he was declared dead. The police identified the victim as Malakai Adams, a resident of nearby Arverne.
At the moment, it’s unclear what led to the shooting. According to investigative sources at various local media, investigators are considering an attempt to rob the scooter that the boy had with him. It is an element that has not yet been publicly confirmed by NYPD as a motive for murder.
The wanted person wore a black sweatshirt and white shorts and would walk east on a scooter, along Beach 51st Street. For the moment no one has yet been arrested and the investigation is underway.
Unfortunately this is not an isolated case for that dial of the city. The area is part of the 101st Precinct, covering part of Far Rockaway and Rockaways. In updated data until September 20, the district had recorded five shootings since the beginning of the year, against the two of the same period of 2025. The numbers are preliminary and are updated weekly by the department.
A week earlier, always in the area of Beach Channel Drive, a 17-year-old boy had been wounded in his chest and arm in another shooting: he had been hospitalized and his conditions were not considered dangerous for life. Also in that case there were no arrests in the hours after the attack.
