Misery Index Confcommercio, the area of social discomfort expands in October

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Misery Index Confcommercio in October consolidates the trend towards the expansion of the area of social discomfort at 13 points, five tenths more than the previous month, which was not recorded since the end of 2023. The estimate of the last month continues to reflect the progressive acceleration of the prices of goods and high-frequency services of purchase (+5.8% from +5.2% of September), resulting from the continuing tensions on fresh energy and food, and the substantial stabilization of the extended unemployment rate.

On the side of the labour market, a marginal increase in the number of employees and people seeking employment was expected in October, confirming the official unemployment rate at 6.3%. Even for the seasonally adjusted standard working units (Ula) affected by the different forms of wage integration (CIG and FIS), it is estimated that there is little dynamism, with an extended unemployment rate which should be 6.9%. According to the first indications, in October 2026 the inflation of goods and services with high frequency of purchase recorded, on the increase of the acceleration of the prices of energy and food unturned, an additional and significant increase rising to 5.8% from 5.2% of September.

In perspective, the persistent international tensions, whose first reflex is the permanence of high energy prices in a context of high volatility, amplify the fears of further rise in inflation, accentuating the risks of secondary effects in the first part of 2027. Thus, the possibility of progressive extensions of the area of social discomfort, measured in the metric of the MIC, and of negative effects on the behaviour of household spending and, consequently, on the prospects of growth.
