ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “In the year in which the eighteenth anniversary of the free choice of the Italian people for the Republic, the celebration of the National Unity Day and the Armed Forces takes on a particular meaning. The oath of fidelity of the Armed Forces to the Republic nourishes of the values of its Constitution, a heritage of preserved principles so that the relationship with the generations that occur in the life of the country can unite the memory of the past to hope for the future of the community, and the atrocities lived in the world wars do not have to repeat themselves”. So the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in the message sent to the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto.
“Let us first of all confirm the crowning of the Risorgimento dream of the Unity of our country, independent and free, and the path that, with the struggle of Liberation, has been able to conquer freedom and democracy for our people and an authoritative role to Italy, with the politics of peace and international cooperation pursued by the Republic – the Head of State emphasizes –. Today, a historical phase of particular complexity sees the Armed Forces projected internationally to ensure, within initiatives of the international community, peace where it is compromised and to preside, together with allied countries, critical areas for the security and prosperity of our country. Their commitment, their daily work are precious to counter any external intent against the community to which we belong and to affirm the respect of international law. Traditional conflicts, which continue to bleed large areas of the world, including Europe, add widespread disinformation, competition in space, cyber dimension, pervasive use of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems, domains in which acts of aggression are now worrying and progressive expansion. It is a scenario that requires deep capacity for renewal, in rapidly integrating new technologies and in ensuring concrete capacity for future challenges. In this sense, it seems urgent to start a common European defence, complementary to the Atlantic Alliance“.
“In this day – Mattarella continues – the deferring tribute of the Italian people goes to those who sacrificed their lives for Italy, giving us an inheritance of freedom and unity that we celebrate with renewed awareness and, today, we turn our thoughts with particular intensity and condolence to our soldiers who have lost their lives in recent days in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A deep bond, of trust and gratitude, unites Army, Marina, Aeronautica, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza to the national community, of which they are an integral part. With these sentiments, I extend my deepest wish to soldiers, sailors, airmen, carabinieri, financiers, civil defence personnel and their families. Live the Armed Forces, live the Republic.”
