ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “There are forty years after the Meeting of friendship and prayer which John Paul II promoted in Assisi, the city of Saint Francis. Religious leaders from all over the world found themselves together to bear witness to peace and fraternity, to reaffirm that one cannot kill, one cannot exploit, one cannot subdue in the name of God. Assisi was a prophetic event. The Community of Sant’Egidio became an animator of international meetings which, year after year, intended to revive the ‘spirit of Assisì while wars, inequalities, wills of power and domination made their oppressive weight feel more and more on the course of history. We are grateful for this precious commitment.” The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, writes this in the message sent to the President of the Community of Sant’Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo, on the occasion of the international meeting for the peace of Assisi.
“Today, with the return to Assisi close to the celebrations for the eighth centenary of the death of the Saint, I wish to express an intense wish for these days to be fruitful – adds the Head of State -. We need reconciliation, peace and cooperation. We experience the deep wounds brought to humanity in wars like in Ukraine, in conflicts like in Gaza, in Palestine, as well as in other places where communities and people call for peace without their voices even coming to us. We need the inviolability of human dignity to be a measure of the politics and behaviour of the States, and a basis for an international law which is once again recognized and respected.”.
“The power of religion is important. They can dare, with the courage that comes from the faiths, from the spiritual dimension that nourishes culture, thought, path, action. They are the example of how dialogue, respect for diversity, solidarity raise confidence and fuel cohesion and security. Inertia is unjustifiable. Conflicts, injustices, poverty, overflows are human products. Throwing the seeds of peace, defeating prejudices, rebuilding right, equity, freedom where they have been trampled is a work that, of course, concerns governments and institutions, but no one is dispensed from fulfilling their part. Each woman, each man can put his passion into the field, exercise his own responsibility, to make possible traits of a world in peace”, concludes President Mattarella.
