ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “It would be a serious mistake” by the United States to restrict access to satellite systems and intelligence information used by Ukraine to defend itself against Russian attacks. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said this in an interview with the Bbc. According to the minister, such a move would risk extending the conflict rather than bringing peace.
“Peace will come when Putin is convinced that there is a stalemate, which cannot go further”, says Crosetto, claiming that only the awareness of not being able to achieve further military results could induce the Kremlin to negotiate. “If you see weaknesses on the Ukrainian side, and if the United States deprives Ukraine of resources, this creates weakness, then you will believe you can win. So the war will continue.”.
The minister therefore questioned the effectiveness of a strategy that aims to exert pressure on Kiev through the reduction of military assistance. In its assessment, depriving Ukraine of the necessary skills to defend it would end up strengthening the Russian expectations of a victory in the field, removing the conditions for negotiated peace.
As for the Italian position, Crosetto assures that military support in Kiev will continue “until this government is in charge”, while recognizing the increasing internal political difficulties. With the approach of the elections, obtaining parliamentary approval for further weapons supplies will in fact be “more difficult”.
