SESTO FIORENTINO (ITALPRESS) – Eli Lilly and Company, the producer of tirzepatide, announced the results of the post-hoc analysis of the ATTAIN-1 study, according to which orforglipron is associated with significant reductions of the risk predicted to 10 years of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in adults suffering from obesity or overweight and at least a comorbidity linked to weight. Obesity is strongly associated with increased risk of developing both cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Thanks to its proven benefits in weight loss and its ability to improve some cardiovascular risk factors such as glycemia, blood pressure and cholesterol, orforglipron may be a significant therapeutic option for over 100 million U.S. adults with obesity. The results of these analyses were published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism. “The association between diabetes and obesity should not be evaluated only in weight control, but also for the risk of future complications that entail – says Paolo Sbraccia, Professor of Internal Medicine, University of Rome Tor Vergata – The new post-hoc analysis of ATTAIN-1 – a trial conducted on a wide and diversified population, representative of patients seen in clinical practice, with a risk that distinguishes itself from historical studies These data, along with the evidence already consolidated on weight loss and improvement of the main cardiometabolic risk factors, confirm the importance of early intervention in obesity to reduce the future risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular, with possible benefits both for the health of patients and for the sustainability of health systems”. “For many people who live with obesity or overweight, concern is not only about what indicates the balance today, but also the possibility of developing type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease in the future,” said Thomas Seck, M.D., Senior Vice President Product Development of Lilly Cardiometabolic Health. “These further analysis of the ATTAIN-1 study shows that orforglipron is associated with a long-term risk reduction of both conditions, as well as significant weight loss. We have also observed evidence that demonstrates how obesity treatment and the risk reduction of its consequences, such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, can significantly contribute to containing health costs. This makes us really optimistic about what long-term use of orofrlipron could represent, both for patients and for the health system as a whole”. In these analyses, modelling has shown that orforglipron was associated with clinically significant improvements in the expected risk at 10 years of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease for all three doses. At 72 weeks, participants taking orforglipron 5.5 mg, 9 mg and 17,2 mg showed an estimated reduction of 45.0%, 50.0% and 57.0% respectively in the expected risk of type 2 diabetes compared to placebo. 4.5 Participants treated with orphorglypron 17,2 mg also showed an estimated reduction of 18.0% of the expected risk of cardiovascular disease compared to placebo.
