Consumer credit, Italian households indebted to 178 billion

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – How much do Italians get involved in living? In 2025, if you take away from the account the mortgages for the house (which are a separate chapter, dealing with long-term investments aimed at increasing the real estate), the consumer credit provided by the banks and the financial to the Italian consumer families has touched on 178 billion euros. To have a term of comparison: nine years ago this figure was much more contained.

The increase was 62 percent equal, in absolute terms, to +68 billion approximately. A remarkable leap that says a lot about changes in spending habits and, above all, in the economic capacity of families. To report it is the CGIA Study Office. If we add the 447,5 billion mortgages to the consumption of the banks only (127 billion euros) to the purchase of a house that 3,8 million families have lit with credit institutions and other forms of residual loans, the total debt rises to 612,6 billion euros. In 2025 the loans accrued in Italy for the purchase of a property were 382.389: the region that signed it more was Lombardy with 93.994. Follow the Veneto with 39.753 and Emilia Romagna with 38.453. But why do Italians become increasingly indebted? The reasons are mainly two.

On the one hand there are those who need immediate liquidity, perhaps to cope with unexpected expenses or to arrive at the end of the month. On the other hand there are those who turn on a loan to buy durable goods: the new car, the TV, the furniture, the appliances – all those important purchases that once were made with the savings. Behind these numbers we do not always see the economic discomfort that is going through an important part of the country.

“However, in recent years the increase in inflation has progressively eroded the purchasing power of the Italians – CGIA emphasizes –: for many salaries and pensions have remained substantially firm, while the prices of goods and services are sketched up. The result is that many families, especially the so-called middle class, in order to maintain the same standard of living as before, have been forced to resort to credit, thus feeding that growth of private debt towards banks and financial that numbers tell clearly.” Household consumption is around 60 percent of Italian GDP.

“For this reason, as we have pointed out above, when families are indebted in the short term (e.g. with loans or credit cards), the effect can be read in two opposite ways – explains the CGIA – again. On the one hand, it is a positive signal: people have more access to credit, spend more and this helps the economy grow. On the other hand, however, it can hide a problem: if the debt increases faster than wages, it means that families are increasingly struggling to arrive at the end of the month and rely on loans to support themselves. The important thing to keep an eye on is therefore the relationship between how much families have to return and how much they really earn. As long as this report remains manageable, there is no need to worry too much. But if it exceeds certain limits, the risk that many families can no longer pay their debts, with negative consequences for the whole economy.”.

The region where consumer families are most exposed in short with banks and finance is Umbria. In 2025 the consumption debt per nucleus was 7.514 euros (+5.1 percent compared to 2024). Tuscany followed with 7,399 euros (+5,6) and Sicily with 7,383 euros (+4.5). In line with the national ranking we see the Friuli Venezia Giulia with 5,845 euros of debt (+4.9), the Basilicata with 5.536 euros (+3.7) and finally the Trentino Alto Adige with 3.824 euros (+5.7). The average national figure was 6,657 euros (+4.9 percent). Also according to the data reported to 2025, the province more in “difficulty” of Italy was Syracuse with a short exposure per family of 8,437 euros (+4 percent regarding 2024). Follow Massa-Carrara with 8.373 euros (+5.8), Lodi with 8.280 euros (+6,5) and Pistoia with 8.168 euros. This last Tuscan province together with Ravenna are the territorial realities where the change over the last year was more important than the country: in both cases +7.1 percent. On the other hand, the most “virtuous” areas were Trento with an exhibition of 4.524 euros (+5.9 percent on the previous year), Sondrio with 4,400 euros (+6,1) and Bolzano with 3.106 euros (+5.3).
