GENOVA (ITALPRESS) – “The health of the eyes comes before the show: on August 12 you do not look directly at the solar eclipse.” Thus the Councillor for Health and Ophthalmologist Massimo Nicolò, in view of the total solar eclipse of the next 12 August launches an awareness initiative and invites all the Italian Regions to spread a unitary message of prevention.
“The eclipse is an event of great charm – continues Nicolò – but you should not forget that looking directly the Sun can cause serious and irreversible damage to the retina and in particular to the macula, responsible for central vision. For this reason, the message I want to address to citizens is very simple: on August 12, do not look at the solar eclipse if not with certified devices, sunglasses are not enough to protect the view.”.
In order to strengthen the prevention campaign, Councillor Nicolò wrote to colleagues from other regions asking, through the Health Department, Healthcare Companies and Territorial Services, that a coordinated information campaign is promoted throughout the national territory.
The aim of the initiative is to reach as many citizens as possible with a simple, clear and immediate message, helping to prevent avoidable eye injury and to promote responsible behaviour at an event that will attract the attention of millions of people.
