Waste, Pichetto “Economy Circular an opportunity for the growth of the country”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The circular economy is a choice of responsibility for all of us. It concerns both the world of production and industrial transformation. Innovations, modernization and digitization have already allowed our country to build important production chains in the waste recovery sector.” So Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of Environment and Energy Security, speaking at the Italian Waste Economy, the event promoted by the Sun 24 Hours and Radio 24 in Rome.

“When we address these issues – he continued – we must not have a defensive attitude, but we must be able to grasp the opportunities. The industrial sector is constantly evolving and Italy has been one of the most advanced countries in this path.” The Minister has claimed the Government’s position in the European negotiation on the packaging and packaging waste regulation (PPWR), underlining that Italy has defended a model already one of the most advanced in Europe on the recycling front. “Why should we, who are among the best in recycling, take steps back just because other countries were less advanced? European rules must push everyone towards higher standards, not downwards,” he said.

Pichetto has therefore recalled the difficulties that the sector is facing, starting from the recycled plastic market. “Today recycled plastic struggles to find market and suffers unfair competition from virgin plastic imported from abroad. On this theme we are working together with the consortia, COREPLA, the Customs Agency and other competent entities to identify effective solutions.” Finally, the minister highlighted the role of the PNRR in the development of the circular economy, recalling the more than two billion euros destined for new plants and to the strengthening of the existing ones, with interventions dedicated to strategic chains, from photovoltaic to wind, from paper to textiles to plastics, as well as initiatives on critical raw materials, RAEE and new systems of extended responsibility of the producer (EPR). “We must continue to accompany the transformation of the Italian production system, enhancing waste as a real strategic resource for the country,” he concluded.
