Consumption, retail sales slightly increased by 0.2% in May

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In May 2026, compared to the previous month, retail sales are slightly increased both in value and in volume (respectively +0.2% and +0.1%). Istat notes this, according to which “analogue positive trends are recorded for the sales of food and for those of non-food goods (+0.2% in value and volume in both cases)”.

In the quarter of March – May 2026, in conjunctural terms, retail sales see an increase in value (+1.2%) and in volume (+0.5%). Growth concerns both sales of food (+1.1% in value and +0.3% in volume) and those of non-food goods (+1.2% in value and +0.8% in volume). On a curtain basis, in May 2026, retail sales recorded an increase of 2.2% in value and 0.4% in volume. Food goods increase in value (+2.0%) and decrease in volume (-0.4%), while non-food goods are growing both in value and in volume (respectively +2.2% and +0.9%).

With regard to non-food goods, positive tendencies are recorded for all groups of products except for durable and non-durable household genes (-0.2%). The biggest increase concerns household appliances, radio, TV and recorders (+4.9%). Compared to May 2025, retail sales value is increasing for all distribution forms, except for sales outside stores (-2.1%). The volume of sales, instead, is growing only for the large distribution (+1.0%) and, in a significant way, for online commerce (+12.1%).
