ISTANBUL (TURKEY) (ITALPRESS) – “NATO is strong when united. It is credible when, besides reacting, it is able to prevent crisis. And it is legitimate when Parliaments participate in decision-making, they monitor the implementation of the choices made and assume their responsibilities before citizens. For this reason, the role of its Parliamentary Assembly is essential.” This was affirmed by the President of the House, Lorenzo Fontana, speaking at the parliamentary summit of the NATO assembly in Istanbul.
Fontana also made a specific reference to the strategic importance of the South side of the Alliance. “The stability of the Mediterranean is Euro-Atlantic stability; the security of Africa and the Middle East is also Europe’s security; and freedom of navigation, the efficiency of critical infrastructure and the protection of supply chains represent common interests of all allies, regardless of their geographical location.” For Fontana “it is necessary to strengthen political cohesion, develop credible military capabilities and promote a shared security culture”.
