Dengue, Oms publishes the first drug optimization process with the aim of accelerating pediatric care

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The World Health Organization has published the first process of optimizing pediatric drugs dedicated to dengue, with the aim of speeding up the development of treatments suitable for children.

The document identifies the research, development and investment priorities necessary to arrive at the therapies formulated specifically for pediatric age. Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes and is now endemic in over one hundred countries.

In 2024 more than 14 million cases were reported and more than 10 thousand deaths, approximately twice as much as the previous year. Children are among the most affected and the smaller ones present a higher risk of complications and serious forms.

Currently there are no authorized dengue treatments and clinical management based mainly on support treatment.

According to the Organization, children must be considered from the early stages of drug development and not only after the design of adult products.
