Mattarella recalls Francesco Coco “First magistrate to fall by the hands of the Red Brigades”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “On June 8, 1976, Francesco Coco was assassinated together with the workers of his protection – the brigadier Giovanni Saponara and the appointed Antioco Deiana – in a bloody attack in Genoa. First magistrate to fall by the terror of the Red Brigades, in what would have been an act of violence destined to mark deeply the civil coexistence of the country”. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, wrote this on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Francesco Coco.

“Procurator General at the Court of Appeal of Genoa, Coco strongly contrasted the blackmail of the Red Brigades during the seizure of magistrate Mario Sossi, opposing the release of prisoners demanded by terrorists, standing in defense of the democratic order of the Republic. In the fiftieth anniversary of the disappearance, I wish to renew sentiments of participation and closeness to the families of the victims, to their colleagues and to those who have kept their memory alive, because the values they were interpreters continue to inspire the institutions and civil society of our country”.
