ABI ATLAS, Centre of competence on the geopolitics of the banking sector

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – International conflicts, fragmentation of global markets, tensions on strategic chains, but also new economic and industrial directors: in recent years geopolitics has passed from context variable to structural and transversal priority for banks, as clearly recognized by the European supervisory authorities. It is not only a risk factor, but also a key to reading to identify opportunities for growth, internationalization and competitiveness. It is in this scenario that ABI ATLAS is born, the Centre of expertise for analysis, training and international networking on the themes of geopolitical evolution, promoted by ABI.

The project, developed by ABIServices in close coordination with the Strategic Technical Committee “Internationalization and Trend Geopolitici” of the Italian Banking Association, was presented today in Rome at the Scuderie of Palazzo Altieri during the event “Geopolitica: between risk factors and opportunity”, with the participation, among others, of representatives of the European Central Bank and the Bank of Italy.

ABI ATLAS, we read in a note, “is the new permanent infrastructure to transform geopolitical analysis into decision-making and operational capacity for the banking sector, through analysis, specialist training and constant comparison with institutions, authorities and with the contribution of prestigious national and international experts.”.

“We live in a context where there is no longer a stable and predictable script to interpret global transformations – said Marco Elio Rottigni, Director General ABI –. Geopolitics has changed nature: it is no longer an isolated and circumscribable risk, but a structural variable that directly affects economic, industrial and financial choices, making the issue of geopolitical risk governance and the ability to read alternative scenarios increasingly central. With ABI ATLAS, the Association plays a role in the great transformation of the sector: to put together skills, analytical skills and access to qualified international partners, so that the sector can face with greater awareness and effectiveness the new challenges, helping to promote the competitiveness and resilience of the banks and the Italian economic system”. ABI ATLAS is aimed primarily at directors, business leaders, control and business functions, while providing scalable digital content for a wider dissemination of skills within organizations. The educational architecture includes seminars, application laboratories, observers on best practices, research groups, teaching modules and a dedicated digital platform, constantly updated.

“ Geopolitics today directly affects risk assessments, strategic choices, cybersecurity and the ability to read market vulnerabilities in advance. However, geopolitics is not only a source of risk: it is also a competitive lever to accompany companies and investments in new global balances – said Elena Goitini, Chairman of the Strategic Technical Committee ABI ‘Internationalization and Trend Geopolitici’, CEO of BNL and Head of BNP Paribas for Italy –. This is why we wanted to create an infrastructure that speaks at all levels of banking, transforming uncertainty into strategic awareness, decision-making skills and new development opportunities. ABI ATLAS allows banks to promote shared standards, and to accompany Italian companies in a world that is redesigning itself, in the role of strategic partners and not only of financiers.”.

The initiative is part of the International Cooperation Plan promoted by the ABI, aimed at strengthening the role of the Italian banking sector in the processes of internationalisation, Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and dialogue with the national, European and multilateral institutions.
