Mattarella “Population of Lebanon hit indebted and brutal way, does not prevail the prepotence of weapons”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The chaos is sadly evident in the Middle East, confirms that the bad practices quickly gather aepics. The unresolved crisis induced by the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the continuing threat of a large-scale war that from Iran could radiate to the whole region – and which already hits so brutally and unduely the civilian population of Lebanon – are the eloquent example of it. All this must not lead to resignation, in the name of a misunderstanding realism that, besides morally deprecatable, would represent a serious error of evaluation.” Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in his speech before the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Italian State on the occasion of the Feast of the Republic, in a speech focused on the values of peace. “The promise for the future, represented by the Republican choice, has been realized. The Italian Republic lives firmly anchored to the values it has witnessed in these 80 years, voted in search of solutions of peace and independence of peoples; engaged in the defense of the dignity and rights of the person; convinced supporter of international cooperation: principles that we see gravely attacked today. A regressive trend of the international order that had a precise accelerator: the unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. Let us see how our cause of independence and freedom of Kyiv,” he says. For the 80 years of the Republic, President Mattarella takes a few steps, from the first vote to women, to the choice to join the European project and the UN.

“The adherence to the European project, to the Atlantic Alliance and to the United Nations was, over the years, confirmation and concrete declination of those principles that led the Italian Republic to support the work of the UN also with the missions of peace it sponsored and the action of the International Courts, the indispensable precondition for a civilization based on the assumption that, even in relations between States, to prevail must be the force of the law and not the prepotence of the weapons. In the context, which appears desolate for international legality, it must be stressed that it is a matter of will and choices. We can decide, in fact, to continue to promote the primacy of international law and the search for shared solutions, adverse to the logic of confrontation and discord. Feeding stances of resentment, hatred pushes, in fact, only on the path of war and perpetual conflicts.” Mattarella also recalls that June 2 of 80 years ago that she finally saw women in the vote. “The representatives of the different countries, eighty years ago, reported, in their reports, the political and social climate that preceded the referendum on 2 June 1946 and then its outcome, which would make Italy a Republic. In that correspondence, the concern of the consequences that this delicate institutional step could have in a strongly tried country, in a climate of intense polarization. A signal of authentic democratic breakthrough of our country came from the vote of women, finally, in that 1946, for the first time at the urns. A new path, based on peace, freedom, democracy and social justice, enshrined in the Constitution which would enter into force on 1 January 1948. In the comments of observers – recalls the head of the state – were emphasized during the work of the Constituent Assembly, two principles which then became the nucleus of Article 11 of our fundamental charter: the repudiation of war for regular international disputes – irreversible change of perspective compared to fascism – and the choice of sharing sovereignty with other peoples, in condition of equality, to give life to a order that could ensure cohabitation. Eloquent sign of the will of the Republic to be an active part in the international community, participating in the construction of the new multilateral order.”.

Finally, addressing the ambassadors present at the Quirinale, Mattarella points out that in an international reality “fragmented and complex, the role of diplomacy, your professionalism, are even more essential, for the ability to draw on the roots of relations between countries, to be able to read in depth the reality in which you work. With respect and appreciation for the commitment you will make available to your governments elements of understanding and intelligence useful to foster ever better collaboration with Italy, I am pleased to be able to celebrate with you the eighty years of our Republic,” he concludes.
