MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Two people have been transported and placed in isolation at the Sacco hospital in Milan to be subjected to monitoring for suspected case of Ebola viruses. It is two cooperatives, a 33-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man belonging to two family groups distinct from 7 people, returned to Lombardy after a period of stay together with a Catholic volunteer organization in an Ugandan area bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the latter state there is currently an Ebola epidemic that has already touched 200 deaths and 900 suspected cases. The two people, resident in the municipalities of Bulgarograsso and Lurate Caccivio both in the province of Como, began to manifest at 24 hours from the return symptoms ascribable to those of the Ebola: fever, diarrhea and vomit. The results are expected in today’s evening. For its part the Councillor for the welfare of Regione Lombardia Guido Bertolaso, during the press conference called to explain the facts, does not exclude that it may be malaria. This hypothesis would be suffragated by the fact that the woman has a daughter who contracted the disease during her stay in Uganda. In Ebola cases, monitoring lasts 21 days from the suspected contagion that is transmitted through contact with biological fluids.
“On the basis of the laboratory results we will know if these patients can be sent home because they do not have the Ebola or if we have to take the measures shared with the Ministry of Health and with the World Health Organization – Bertolaso explained – If, as I hope and hope, they will be two negative cases of Ebola, it will mean they will have contracted malaria. In case of positivity at the Ebola, they will scatter all the total isolation measures plus the interventions with all the contacts they had from their return”. The Councillor then criticized the leak of news on the story by the administrators of the municipalities involved in the very first hours. “As I think the results will be negative, we prefer to give the information after we have the certainty of the situation before which we find ourselves. It was absolutely not the case of spreading alarms – he said – I know well the ebola having lived three months in Sierra Leone during the most serious epidemic of ebola in human history and I know well that it can be a serious health problem, but to be it needs a series of climatic and social conditions that fortunately we do not have here in Italy”.
