Dombrovskis “The challenges for the European economy remain unchanged”

NICOSIA (CIPRO) (ITALPRESS) – “I presented the spring economic forecasts of the European Commission yesterday. The Middle East conflict triggered a new energy shock, with repercussions on inflation, growth and public finance throughout the EU. The increase in energy prices is already affecting households and businesses across Europe. In this context, we must remain vigilant in safeguarding the health of public finances.” So the European Commissioner for Economy, Valdis Dombrovskis, at the press conference at the end of the informal Eurogroup meeting. “It is expected that the European economy will continue to grow, but at a slower pace. The energy shock is also exerting further pressure on our public finances,” he added.

“In 2025, ten Member States registered deficits of more than 3% of GDP. By 2027 it is expected that this number will rise to thirteen. We expect the average EU budget deficit to rise from 3.1% of GDP in 2025 to 3.5% this year and 3.6% next year,” he explained.

“This means drawing the just lessons from past crises and ensuring that support measures remain temporary and targeted. In more general terms, although the energy crisis represents our last test, the broadest challenges facing the European economy remain unchanged. We must strengthen our commitment to build a more competitive Europe in order to ensure our long-term prosperity,” said Dombrovskis.
