MILAN (ITALPRESS) – “Only a government that lives closed in the building for three years can think that this is the priority. The indication coming from the referendum was clear: the Italians want a government that deals with the concrete problems that concern their lives and the right that had the numbers in Parliament to do so has managed to do nothing to improve the life of the Italians. Their proposal is inadmissible. How can they think of dialogue on the pre-emptive appetizer, with the premier still on the table, which we contest hard”. The secretary of the Pd, Elly Schlein, says this in an interview with the “Corriere della Sera”.
At the premier time Giorgia Meloni opened the whole-field dialogue with the opposition. “After forcing parliamentary procedures on numerous occasions, he makes these statements as if he had not already denied, and with her the rest of the district, the comparison we had asked in these years on wages, health and congestion – Schlein rebates –. There was a meeting at Palazzo Chigi in August 2023, after which they no longer made themselves alive and only after losing the referendum they say they want dialogue. What kind of comparison does Meloni have? I’m the first one who turned to her on multiple occasions. We have made more proposals and have always told us not.”
We talk about a possible involvement of Forza Italia with the Pd in the next legislature. “No. I have already said it and I repeat it: we will go to the government only by winning the elections with the progressive alliance that we have reconstructed in these years. There are no other options: this is the mandate I have received from our voters. No wide-ranging availability,” Schlein assures.
If he were to the government now what would his three priorities be? “It’s simple: health, work and energy. We would immediately approve a minimum wage because Italy with these salaries and this precariousness is not at the pace with Europe. Energy because it is the first demand of enterprises and is at the center of a strategy of growth that serves the country. We – he concludes – would immediately accelerate investments on renewables to reduce the cost of energy and dependence on gas. On public health we indicated to the government where we immediately recover resources to hire doctors and nurses who are missing and, consequently, to really reduce waiting lists.”
As for the Middle East conflict, there is a European mission in Hormuz. “I think it is not possible to send ships to Hormuz without a peace agreement. And they also serve a clear legal framework and an international mandate, conditions that are not currently there,” Schlein concludes.
