GEMONA DEL FRIULI (ITALPRESS) – After the shock of May 6, 1976 “the time of fear and pain lasted little and was short, because another feeling was made wide, pride. There was no time to cry and commit, it was necessary to act, it was necessary to react”. The president of the Giorgia Meloni Council said this, in his intervention in Gemona del Friuli to the extraordinary Regional Council on the occasion of the commemoration for the 50th anniversary of the earthquake.
“Where many would be defeated by despair, the friulani did not – he added –: the friulani made their own move, wrapped their sleeves, put themselves at work and decided that they would revive this land from the rubble that had disfigured it. They did so in a way that became a model for the whole of Italy, the Friuli model, the best model of post-sysmic reconstruction that Italy has known today”.
“A model that was born of simple yet brilliant insights, so visionary for the time to be effective today,” Meloni stressed. The premier recalled the then commissioner Giuseppe Zamberletti, “one of the most enlightened servants of our countries”, who understood how “the citizens could work best together, each with their own task, each with their own competence, as a team does, with the coordination of the state. It is the idea that has laid the foundations of the Italian Civil Protection system we know today and of which we are all proud. A state-of-the-art system, which is also today, in the new crisis scenarios, an absolute point of reference even internationally,” added Meloni.
