ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “We cross an insidious hairpin bend in history. Multilateral institutions and international law, which are designed to guarantee contemporary order, are challenged daily when not developed by behaviour of protagonists of international life. A situation of permanent conflict and competition would claim to replace the logic of cooperation.” This is said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent to the President of the Institute for International Policy Studies – ISPI, Maria Angela Zappia, on the occasion of the sixth edition of the NEXT forum in Milan.
“The indiscriminate use of force, made even more lethal by the introduction of technologies based on Artificial Intelligence, would like to become the ordinary tool for dispute resolution among states – explains the head of the state -. In this period, there are several dozen wars in the world, some of which have been going on for years, other recently conflagrated, with human costs and unacceptable materials. Thought goes to all the populations involved, from Africa to the Middle East to the eastern borders of our Europe.”
“The generations must make their voice heard, exercising critical thinking also thanks to dialogue and active participation in public debate. Comparison is also an argine against the risks of manipulation in the so-called “infosfera”, increasingly polluted by malicious initiatives. The world is faced with global challenges that dictate the agenda to look at. Addressing them requires the use of the key to cooperation between peoples. Themes such as climate change – like conflicts, iniquity in development and the attainment of effective conditions of gender equality – cannot be dismissed. Their consequences generate terrible human costs, forcing relevant masses of population to emigration by despair and lack of opportunity – Mattarella concludes. The opportunities offered by scientific research, with its increasing applications, offer solutions until yesterday unthinked. They must be developed in the direction of the dignity of every person and every people. You will be discussing these days with complex and compelling reflections that, I hope, may be valid for your future activity.
