In the fourth quarter of 2025 export is in decline to the exclusion of the Italian Centre

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In the fourth quarter of 2025 Istat estimates a conjunctural decline of export for all territorial divisions, excluding the Centre (+0.7%). The conjunctural reduction is wide for the South and Islands (- 6.7%), more contained for the North-East (- 1.1%) and the North-West (-0.5%).

In 2025, compared to the previous year, the growth of national exports in value (+3.3%) is a synthesis of differentiated territorial dynamics: the increase of exports is marked for the Centre (+13.2%), more contained for the South (+3.2%), the North-West (+2.3%) and the North-East +(2,0%), while a wide contraction for the Islands (-11.0%). In the complex of 2025, compared to 2024, the most dynamic regions to export are Tuscany (+21.3%), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (+17.8%), Calabria (+10.8%), Liguria (+10.2%) and Lazio (+9.6%); those that record the broadest flexions, Basilicata (-17.8%), Sardinia (-11.4%), Sicily (-10.8%) and Marche (-7.6%).

Also last year, the increase in exports of pharmaceutical, chemical-medicial and botanical articles from Tuscany, Lazio, Lombardy, Abruzzo and Campania explains for 2.6 percentage points the growth of the national export compared to 2024; a further positive contribution of a percentage point comes from the greater exports of base metals and metal products, excluding machines and plants from Tuscany.

On the contrary, the contraction of sales of sports articles, games, musical instruments, precious instruments, medical instruments from Tuscany and petroleum products refined by Sicily and Sardinia provides a negative contribution of a percentage point to the change of export. In the entire year, the biggest positive contributions to the national export stem from the increase in sales of Tuscany towards Switzerland (+201.1%), France (+39.2%), Spain (+76.4%), United States (+19.9%) and OPEC countries (+44.5%) and Lazio towards the United States (+54.2%). The largest negative contributions, on the other hand, come from the decline in Tuscany’s sales to Turkey (-55.8%), Lazio to the Netherlands (- 24.0%) and Emilia-Romagna to the United States (- 6.5%).

In 2025, the provinces that contribute to a greater extent to supporting sales on foreign markets are Florence, Arezzo, Trieste, Varese and Frosinone; those that provide the most extensive negative contributions, Syracuse, Milan, Cagliari, Ascoli Piceno and Siena.

“In the fourth quarter of 2025, export records a negative economic dynamic extended to all divisions, excluding the Centre – is the commentary of the Statistical Institute. On an annual basis, growth, while remaining sustained, slows down for the Northwest, the Northeast and the Center, while the performance of the South and the Islands is negative. Export growth in value in 2025 (+3.3%) is a synthesis of positive dynamics of different intensity that concern all areas, excluding the Islands, whose decline in exports is mainly due to lower sales of refining products. Tuscany – thanks mainly to the increase in sales of pharmaceuticals and metals – is the region that offers the most important contribution to the growth of national exports in 2025′′.
