In 2025 metalmechanical production decreased by 0.9%

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In 2025 industrial activity continued to be conditioned by the complex international scenario with reflections on the supply chain, energy costs and export strategies. The production dynamics have been unstable and without the ability to effectively recover from the past, highlighting, on the basis of raw data, an average 1% trend contraction. Even in the metalworking industry, production averaged 0.9% compared to the previous year. In the course of the entire 2025, the production dynamic was quite swinging in both congiuntural and tendential terms. This is what emerges from the data of the 177th edition of the Federmeccanica congiuntural survey on the metalmeccanica industry – Italian mechatronics. The sectoral deterioration was particularly affected by the reduced manufacture of motor vehicles and trailers, which was recorded compared to 2024 (-11.1%) with contractions recorded in the production of metal products (-1.1%), electrical machinery (-0.6%) and mechanical machinery (-0.5%).

On the contrary, the production of metallurgy (+3.0%) and computer compartments, radio-tv devices and precision instruments (+1.9%) and other means of transport (+1.6%).

“Our companies need Italian steel – says Simone Bettini, president of Federmeccanica – Italy needs the former Ilva. The message of the metalworking industry that comes from our investigation is strong and clear. And it is a message that we turn to those who can activate the right levers to translate a serious problem into a great opportunity for Italy. Our country must avoid any form of tactical dependence and must realize a full strategic autonomy that is fundamental to resume a healthy path of growth.”.

In 2025, metalmechanical exports increased by 2.9% compared to 2024. A growth rate still far from the double figure that traditionally characterized the export of the sector.

The strong geopolitical tensions and the trade policy of the United States, between announcements, introduction but also denials and changes of duties is a huge obstacle to return to an adequate level of export growth. Imports have also grown, resulting in a positive balance of the trade balance of 52.1 billion. Increases in value exchange have been influenced by a strong growth in unit average values. In 2025, in the context of the European Union, the sectoral export has recorded a negative change only towards France (-0.2%), while with reference to direct flows on markets outside the Community area it is known as towards the United States that, with a share of 10.4% of the total sector, represent the second market of the outlet of our metalworking products, the increase, on average annual, was 1.8% mainly thanks to the reduction of transport.
