ROMA (ITALPRESS) – According to the preliminary estimates of Istat, in January 2026 the national index of consumer prices for the whole community (NIC), to the gross of tobacco, recorded a change of +0.4% on a monthly basis and +1% on an annual basis (from +1.2% of December).
Inflation support is mainly due to the dynamics of the prices of food goods, not processed (+2.5%) and processed (+2.2%), to that of the prices of the Services relative to the home (+4.4%), the tobacco (+3.3%) and the recreational, cultural services and for the care of the person (+3%).
In January, the “bottom inflation”, net of fresh energy and food, is equal to +1.8% and that net of only energy goods at +1.9%. In January 2026 the prices of goods recorded a variation of -0.2% regarding the same month of the previous year, while the prices of services are growing, on a tendential basis, of +2.5%.
The differential between the service sector and that of goods, therefore, is pairs to +2.7 percentage points. The prices of food goods, for the care of the house and of the person increase of 2.1% regarding January 2025.
The change in the general index (+0.4%) mainly affected the increase in the prices of regulated energy (+8.7%), the Services for housing (+1.9%), non-worked food (+1.2%) and processed (+0.9%), non-regulated energy (+0.8%), recreational, cultural and personal care services (+0.7%).
The only reduction on a conjunctural basis is recorded for the prices of the Transport Services (- 3.7%). Inflation acquired for 2026 was +0.4% for the general index (in December it was nothing) and +0.5% for the underlying component (+0.2% in December). According to preliminary estimates, the Harmonised Consumer Price Index (IPCA) recorded a change of -1.0% on a monthly basis and +1.0% on an annual basis (from +1.2% of the previous month).
“In January 2026, according to preliminary estimates, consumer prices increase by 1.0% compared to the same month of the previous year, returning to a level just above that recorded in October 2024 (+0.9%) – comments Istat -. On the increase in consumer prices mainly weighs the trend of prices of unworked food (+2.5%) and processed (+2.2%), of the Services relative to the home (+4.4%), tobacco (+3.3%) and recreational, cultural services and for the care of the person (+3%). The annual growth rate of the “expenditure cart” is +2.1%, while the underlying inflation is +1.8%”.
