The overtaking was in the air for days, but now the numbers make it definitive. Buen Camino, the new comedy with Checco Zalone directed by Gennaro Nunziante, became the Italian film with the greatest recess ever. In three weeks of programming it exceeded 65.6 million euros in the box office, with over 8.1 million spectators, beating the previous record that Zalone himself had established in 2016 with Quo Vado?. At the time that film had stopped just under 65.4 million, remaining for years the reference of Italian commercial cinema.
The data is relevant even if read in the context of the national box office: in the overall ranking of the biggest cashouts in Italy, Buen Camino climbed to the second place overall, behind only to Avatar of James Cameron, who in 2009 had reached approximately 68.6 million euros. But the comparison with international cinema is less balanced if you look at current events: Avatar – Fire and ash, the last chapter of the saga, has so far stopped around 23 million euros, a result distant from that obtained from the film of Zalone in the same arc of time.
Zalone’s comedies have often dominated the seasonal charts, especially during periods of greater affluence such as holidays. Already with films like Sun in Catinelle and Quo Go?, Zalone had shown an outscale ability to intercept the general public, exceeding not only the Italian competing titles but also many Hollywood productions.
