Terna, by 2025 operating new infrastructures for approximately 800 million euros

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – By 2025 Terna plans to start in operation development infrastructure for approximately 800 million euros. The result recorded in the year confirms the Company’s commitment led by Giuseppina Di Foggia in strengthening the security and resilience of the national transmission network, in support of the country’s energy transition path. Since 2023 the value of the interventions delivered to full operation is more than 2 billion euros.“The works of Terna entered in operation from 2023 to today, for more than two billion euros of investments, make the transmission of energy more secure and the network more flexible. The submarine connection with Elba Island, the strengthening of the Sicilian electricity network, the new interconnections with Austria and France: sustainable infrastructure that strengthen the network and allow to integrate new renewable energy – said Giuseppina Di Foggia, CEO and General Manager of Terna -. Over 80 projects were authorised in the same period, with a record value of more than six billion euros. The main works are already under construction: large infrastructures that unite the country and increase the efficiency of the network, making it able to better manage peaks of demand and to transport energy from points of generation to areas with greater consumption. It is the confirmation of our performance ability. And we will continue this way: to guarantee Italy a more reliable and ready electric system for the challenges of the future”. Over 300 km of electrical connections were created in the year, ensuring maximum attention to environmentally friendly solutions. Among the main works, those for the Olympic Games and Winter Paralympics of Milan-Cortina 2026, with over 130 km of underground pipelines to ensure a more robust and reliable knitting of the network. In Sicily, moreover, the director at 380 kV Paternò-Pantano-Priolo was completed, key work for the regional electrical system, which contributes to improving the continuity of the service and to support the integration of renewable sources. These interventions are added to other important operational infrastructures since 2023 such as the interconnection in underground cable between Italy and France and that between Italy and Austria, which increase the ability to exchange and strengthen the stability of the energy system in the Alpine regions, and the Elba-Continente connection, the submarine electrode that doubles the lines of connection between the network of the island and Piombino (Livorno). On the authorization front, today the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security and the competent regional councillors have given the green light to 36 new interventions of Terna distributed throughout the national territory, for a total investment of 1 billion euros. Among the main projects authorized in 2025, the rationalization of the network in the West Brianza, the new electric station in Volpago (Treviso) and the electrification of the docks of the port of La Spezia, first at national level in this area. Moreover, the reassessment of the South-West Dial of Rome, to increase the efficiency of the capital network, and the realization of the new electric station of Perdasdefogu (Nuoro) to ensure greater resilience in a territory subject to frequent snow phenomena. Since 2023, projects of national and European importance have been authorised by Terna, which will contribute to the achievement of the decarbonization objectives and increase the ability to exchange between market areas. Of these, the most important are submarine links: the western branch of Tyrrhenian Link, between Sicily and Sardinia; the Sa.Co.I 3, the project of renewal, modernization and strengthening of the electrode between Sardinia, Corsica and Tuscany; the Adriatic Link, which will join Marche and Abruzzo; Elmed, the energy bridge between Italy and Tunisia; and the Bolano-Annunziata electronics, between Calabria and Sicily. Together with the development of new works, in 2025 the Group has prepared the Security Plan, which defines interventions dedicated to the prevention and mitigation of disservices, through the introduction of advanced monitoring and control technologies, the digitization of infrastructure and measures to increase the resilience of the network to the effects of climate change. In the Industrial Plan the Group has allocated 2.3 billion euros to the strengthening of the safety and stability of the national electrical system, previewing the installation of new adjustment equipment – including synchronous compensators, reactors, Statcom and stabilizing resistors – essential to ensure continuity of the service and prepare the network to the challenges of the energy transition and the increasing digitization.
