From historical heritage to inclusion, new projects for the Fincantieri Foundation

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – A year since the start of the new course, Fondazione Fincantieri has presented, today, at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, the projects and activities that mark the path of relaunch. The meeting, which saw the participation of representatives of institutions, academics and civil society, was an important opportunity to discuss the role of the Foundation as a driving force for development, innovation and cohesion in communities.

Speakers Paola Severino, president of the National School of Administration and Luiss School of Law; Antonella Polimeni, director of Sapienza University of Rome; Roberto Giulianelli of the Polytechnic University of Marche, author of the volume “History of Italian shipbuilding in the contemporary age. From Unity to the Giolittian Age (1861 -1913 ), presented during the event. For Fincantieri the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Pierroberto Folgiero, president Biagio Mazzotta, also president emeritus of the Foundation; the president of the Fondazione Fausto Recchia and Lorenza Pigozzi, Director of Strategic Communication of the Group and member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation.

The Foundation’s work consists of three complementary directors who define the threefold role: keeper of memory, promoter of innovation and agent of social impact. Through the digitization of the archives and the design of an interactive museum, Fondazione Fincantieri enhances the historical heritage of the Italian shipbuilding industry, making the memory accessible and transforming it into an instrument of knowledge and culture for communities, schools and public. In this area there is also the editorial collection dedicated to the history of Italian navalmeccanica. The first volume, History of Italian shipbuilding in the contemporary age.

From Unity to the Giolittian Age (1861 -1913), edited by Professor Roberto Giulianelli and published by Laterza, will be in the library from 16 January 2026. The book opens a five-volume cycle that tells over two centuries of history of the sector, highlighting the central role of Fincantieri. The historical photos present within the volume were exhibited in an exhibition on the occasion of the event. With “Navigare il Futuro”, the Foundation renews its commitment to research, training and promotion of the culture of innovation. In memory of General Claudio Graziano, a path dedicated to enhancing its heritage, through educational projects and a scholarship supported by the Fincantieri Foundation in collaboration with the Centro Alti Studi per la Difesa (CASD).

The collaborations with universities such as Sapienza University of Rome and Luiss Guido Carli have created research projects on new materials, work medicine and regulation of underwater critical infrastructure, including the SUBCAP project. Internationally, the partnership with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) led to the establishment of a scholarship for young researchers in maritime safety and cyber-resilience. The “Navigare Insieme” line focuses on inclusion, dialogue with the territories and social cohesion. Among the initiatives already started are the Italian language courses realized in the yards of Monfalcone, Sestri, Marghera and Ancona, in collaboration with Dante Alighieri, in order to promote linguistic integration, multiculturality and equal opportunity.

Alongside these actions, the Foundation is developing new social impact projects aimed at regenerating shared spaces, creating meeting places and building concrete territorial welfare. The goal is to offer alternatives to youth discomfort, enhance the experience of former employees and strengthen the local human capital, rebuilding trust links between industry, families, institutions and communities. During the event, the Young Advisory Board, a new advisory body under 40, was presented to enhance the contribution of young generations in the definition of the Foundation’s cultural, scientific and social lines.

In a context in which the industrial dimension must dialogue more and more with society, the Foundation is a strategic tool for strengthening the link with the territories, enhancing our heritage and promoting a culture of innovation and shared responsibility”, says Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri. “Through concrete projects and long-term vision, we confirm Fincantieri’s commitment to be not only economic engine, but also cultural and social reference for the communities we operate in,” he adds.

“The Foundation was founded to promote training and innovation by creating bridges between industrial, academic and civil society.” So Biagio Mazzotta, president of Fincantieri, intervening at the event. “We must make our history accessible, accelerate research, train talent and strengthen social commitment in the territories where we operate. Foundation had a growth path consolidating the role of development engine for sea communities. This is a collective work that has allowed us to achieve these important goals,” he adds.
