The New York Italian Women Association launches, on 20 November, a webinar dedicated to the functioning of health insurance in the United States, a theme that continues to generate doubts among long-standing residents. The meeting, scheduled at 16.30 on Zoom, is aimed above all to those who live in the United States but still has not acquired a thorough knowledge of the rules governing access to care, an area that over the years has generated political discussions, incomplete reforms and a high level of fragmentation between States and private companies.
The American insurance system is based on health plans managed by commercial insurance, which people buy individually or through the employer. The variety of floors – including HMO, PPO and EPO – determines the way doctors, refunds and specialist procedures are accessed. They are often intuitive mechanisms for those coming from countries with universal public health systems, such as Italy, where coverage does not depend on the type of contract for which you opt.
To explain these aspects will participate two professionals with complementary experiences: Lisa S. Wiechmann, oncologist at Columbia University, and Josenny Sanchez, administrator with over ten years of experience in the management of health services. The two rapporteurs will answer questions on the criteria to be assessed before signing insurance, additional costs related to off-line benefits and procedures for obtaining refunds.
The discussion will be moderated by the television correspondent Francesca Forcella. The initiative aims to clarify what are the elements that most frequently generate confusion among users: from the choice of the most suitable plan to the limitations imposed by the networks of doctors agreed. The organisers invite participants to prepare specific questions, including personal situations or differences between the main contractual types.
The webinar is open to the public after registration by email. Access will be via Zoom, through the link and credentials indicated by the organizers. Participation is free of charge.
