N.I.C.E. (New Italian Cinema Events), the cultural organization founded by Viviana Del Bianco in Florence, returns to the United States this autumn with its 35th edition dedicated to the promotion of contemporary Italian cinema in the world. For over three decades, N.I.C.E. has built an international network of projections and cultural events in Europe (Dublin, Riga), the United States (New York City, Philadelphia) and Asia (Azerbaigian), presenting the best of the new Italian cinema.
“Always keeping his mission clear, for 35 years N.I.C.E. has built a network of events around the world that present the best of the new Italian cinema. The great sensitivity and openness to all that is new in visual culture — which we met in the public during our travels — continue to inspire us year after year, encouraging us to embrace the many opportunities that arise,” says Viviana Del Bianco, artistic director of N.I.C.E.
The New York edition will be hosted in two prestigious locations: the historic Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò of NYU and the Italian Institute of Culture, the same locations that welcomed the first American edition of N.I.C.E. The projections are supported by long-time partners and the Italian Ministry of Culture. N.I.C.E. is also twinned with Sudestival, directed by Michele Suma, a reference point for quality Italian cinema in Puglia.
“New York and Philadelphia are historical goals for N.I.C.E., and we are particularly proud of this year’s selection of films: stories of growth and self-discovery that cross Italy and connect people of all ages, genres and backgrounds. I hope that each of you will lose — and then you will find yourself — in these films. Good vision!” adds Del Bianco.
N.I.C.E. will open with La Vita da Grandi (2025), directed by actress Greta Scarano, based on the 2020 autobiographical novel My sister breaks the dances of Margherita and Damiano Tercon, with Matilda De Angelis as protagonist. He will follow Duse, The Greatest, director of the acclaimed actress Sonia Bergamasco. In the centenary of his death, Bergamasco leads us into an investigation into the legendary actress who has forever changed his profession, inspiring successive generations of interpreters. N.I.C.E. will end on 25 November with The Gold of the Rhine by Lorenzo Pullega, a touching work that explores the concept of home and roots through the journey of a man to discover his origins.
Among the guests in New York will be Federico Palmerini, editor of Duse, The Greatest, and director Lorenzo Pullega, while Greta Scarano will record a video message ahead of the film. The festival will then continue in Philadelphia (5-6-7 December) at Penn Cinema and Media Studies, presenting a selection of seven films with remote meetings and pre-recorded videos, with the support of the Italian Consulate General in Philadelphia.
The complete program is available on the official website of the festival.
