Bankitalia, the Italian companies lacking on the management of climate risks

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Bank of Italy publishes today “Do companies care about the risks related to climate change? The results of an investigation in Italy”, the new number of the series “Mercati, infrastructure, payment systems”. The work presents the results of an investigation conducted by the Bank of Italy in 2024 on the management of climate risks by Italian non-financial enterprises. The results at company level allow a more accurate assessment of climate risks and their effect on credit merit. The analysis reports widespread shortcomings in the management of physical emissions and risks, in the planning of transition and governance. Many insurance companies tend to underestimate the physical risk. Moreover, approaches to climate risk management are characterized by a pronounced heterogeneity, reflecting differences in governance patterns, between sectors, between geographical areas.

Finally, the results suggest that commitments to increase climate sustainability, unless accompanied by measurable progress, do not necessarily improve the creditworthiness of an enterprise. The information processed in this work will be used to strengthen the integration of climate risks in the ICAS system of the Bank of Italy.
