Rome and New York are two very different cities, but those living in their central neighborhoods have to deal with often similar problems. Rentals increase, apartments become holiday homes, residents move elsewhere and find a balance between the needs of those who live in the city and those of those who visit it is increasingly complicated. In May 2026, the City Hall I of Rome and Manhattan district signed a cooperation agreement to discuss these issues, but also to promote cultural exchanges and find new solutions to the problems of major cities.
Lorenza Bonaccorsi is the president of the City Hall I of Rome, which includes much of the historical center of the Capital. In the past, she has been appointed, councillor of Tourism of the Lazio Region and undersecretary of Cultural Heritage. We interviewed her to understand how the deal with Manhattan was born, what results could produce and what the two cities can learn from each other. We also spoke of the right to the house, of access to culture, of the relationship between the mayors Roberto Gualtieri and Zohran Mamdani and of how the political relations between Italy and the United States are changing.
