“We increase defence costs to strengthen the European axis”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Europe must take note that the world geopolitical situation has changed enormously since NATO was born in 1949.” Thus, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, the Minister for European Affairs, the Pnrr and the Coesione, Tommaso Foti, on the upcoming NATO summit.

It was an anti-Soviet alliance, Foti recalls, “he was born to defend the Western bloc from the threat of Urss, very concrete, and it was good for both the US and Europe: great economic burdens for America but also bases in Europe that they served.”.

“Today – adds the Minister – for the U.S. has become fundamental the Indo-Pacific theatre, given the enormous growth of China. And not only Trump, but also presidents of the past like Obama – albeit with different tones and ways – asked for a rebalancing of expenses. Getting to 5% of the GDP by 2035 for defence costs will not be easy because it seems a disproportionate request.”

“The European public opinion, and the Italian opinion in particular – Foti points out – does not see the need that instead is real to strengthen the European axis of NATO. Countries that have undergone communism or are closer to Russia feel the problem much more, but also Germany is spending a lot while having an economic situation not easy. We have come for 81 years of peace, but it is necessary to understand that times change.”

As for supplies in Kiev, “for 2026 the European contribution has already been decided, then we will see. We have always helped Ukraine with energy supplies, with aid of civil use, we will continue to do so,” says the Minister.
